Theft and Burglary Claims
Having your possessions taken from you can be a traumatizing and devastating experience. What do you do afterward?
One of the first steps, once you realize your property has been stolen, is to make sure the correct authorities are contacted.
When the police arrive be sure to go into detail about what occurred and what was taken. The police will note all of this in their police report and make a record. After the police, your next move is to contact your insurance company so you can file a claim. Homeowner’s or renter’s insurance will cover many theft cases. The police report is a crucial document that is used for theft claims. If there was anything damaged, be sure to take photos. The insurance company will also cover repairs costs, such as any windows, locks, or doors that were broken to enter your home. The amount of coverage depends on your policy limits and the type of coverage.
Many people don’t realize that in addition to the police report, insurance companies need proof of ownership when it comes to filing a claim. If you have done a property inventory, you can use that to give to your insurance company. If you have not done any kind of property inventory, you will need something else, such as a credit card statement or receipt.
To try and prevent theft from occurring in your home, be sure to take measures such as locking your doors and windows as well as making sure your security systems are up to date.
